Switzerland

In Switzerland, all diabetes medicines, including insulins, devices, supplies and technologies for blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration are available for people living with diabetes (PwD). Everyone is required to purchase a private health insurance and pay an annual deductible before gaining access to most healthcare services free of charge. A national list regulates the maximum cost reimbursed for supplies and technologies, and in certain cases, co-payment may be necessary.

Psychological support and self-management education are available to all citizens. They are fully reimbursed if prescribed by a physician.

Diabetes specialist nurses are required to follow a special academic course and play a role in the prevention and management of all types of diabetes. However, they are not allowed to prescribe diabetes medicines.

This country profile was developed with the help of the Swiss Diabetes Association (Diabetesschweiz).
